Choosing the Right Material for Floor Medallions

Custom floor medallions are an amazing decorative addition for a wide variety of buildings.  When placed in a school or office building lobby, they add an immediate sense of gravitas and class—a real feeling of being in a place with meaning.  When placed in a home, they create an air of timelessness and antiquity.  Floor medallions can be as simple or as complex as you want—a true symbolic showpiece illustrating the message you want to send about yourself, your family, or your organization’s values.

Beyond the design of the floor medallion itself—which our clients often provide, or we can help you design—the biggest question is often one of material.  Floor medallions can be made from several different materials, just depending on the surrounding flooring and how that room will be used.

These are some of the most popular choices when we’re helping clients select the perfect floor medallion for their design.

The Top Three Materials for Creating a Floor Medallion

  1. Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT)

VCT is the most popular material among our clients, largely because it has an excellent balance between price and durability.  If you are on a tight budget, VCT is probably the choice for you. It has long been recognized as an excellent choice for long-term value.  Better yet, VCT is available in virtually limitless colors and is extremely simple to work with.  Generally, when working with VCT to create medallions, the only limitation is your imagination.

  1. Porcelain Tile

The second most-popular option in medallions is porcelain tile.  It is more expensive than vinyl, but it is longer lasting than VCT and well suited for extremely high-traffic areas.  Porcelain tile medallions are also perfect for home or corporate bathrooms and showers. The sheen of porcelain tile makes it an excellent eye-catcher, and porcelain tile is also available in a wide variety of colors.

  1. Natural Stone

Natural stonework—particularly marble and granite—is the most expensive option, but also by far the most elegant.  Genuine stonework always sends messages of substance and style, and granite and marble’s unique appearance are especially pleasing to the eye.  In addition, natural stone integrates seamlessly with porcelain tile to create medallions of striking contrasts that pop.
