Custom Waterjet Cutting Service – How Can Water Cut Through Steel?

We often field a questions about our custom waterjet cutting service and its capabilities.  In particular, we run into the misconception that water jet cutting is only good for cutting hard stone like granite.

While it’s true that water jet cutting is exceptionally good at cutting stone (often the only viable option) it has a much wider range of capabilities.  At Precision Cutting Service, we cut more metal than we do stone, even hard metals like steel that people assume requires either a high-powered laser or an acetylene torch.

How A Custom Water Jet Cutting Service Cuts Steel

One of the most important factors to understand about waterjet cutting is the incredible force that is behind the water jet itself.  The pressure in our cutting system is typically 50,000 PSI or more.  Water coming out of our jets can be moving at more than two thousand miles per hour.  That one heck of a lot of intense energy and it is that energy that permits us to cut steel and other hard materials.

In addition, we often add a fine abrasive to the water to give it more teeth, so to speak. Those abrasives also help ensure a smooth, clean cut.  Indeed, our cut surfaces often appear to be sandblasted, and they do not they require finishing.

Our cutting nozzles are precision engineered, capable of handling extreme high pressure while providing a stream that never changes in size.  Our nozzles can actually hold the water to a stream that’s around two-thousandths of an inch (.002″).  So, with a stream of water at such high pressure, moving at such high speeds, focused to such a fine point … we can smoothly and precisely cut just about any material, particularly metal.

Another water jet cutting quality is that we can create exceptionally deep cuts.  We can handle materials six inches thick or more, and the jet still cuts through them effortlessly.
