Sometimes, when you’re doing a lot of development or prototyping in-house, it might be tempting to try to cut your own custom gaskets rather than ordering them from an experienced supplier.  But that exercise can involve a lot of costly wasted time with experimentation. A better course of action might be to contract a proven gasket manufacturer like Precision Cutting Service.

It’s easy enough to find single suppliers for different materials, but it can be time-consuming and tedious to order material from many different sources.  It’s better to find a single supplier who knows what material you need based on your application.

Here’s what to look for.

Three Traits You Want in A Gasket Materials Supplier

  1. A wide range of material types

Every gasket material has its strengths and weakness that are suitable for some applications but not others.  You’ll want to make certain your supplier has a large stock of materials on hand so that you can try out different solutions to see which works best with your application.

At the least, your supplier should be able to provide:

  • Rubber
  • Cork
  • Fiberglass
  • Graphite
  • Fiber weave
  • C-4401
  • PTFE (Teflon)
  • Foam

And probably some more exotic name-brand materials like Santoprene, Neoprene, or Viton, as well.  Basically, the more materials they can provide, the better.

  1. Expert advisors on-staff

The right gasket materials supplier can do more than just provide raw materials.  They can also offer invaluable advice and perfectly cut gaskets. This can often cut significant time and money off your development budget, as opposed to having to do all the legwork and research in-house.

  1. Rapid turnaround times

You also want to make sure you’re working with a supplier who keeps a large stock of materials on-hand so that they can fulfill your order in a minimal amount of time.  If you’re having to wait on them to order from their own supplier, you aren’t getting any benefit over ordering directly.

However, if the materials are in stock, this too can substantially speed up your project.
